Baptisms
Baptism is the sacrament of entrance to the community of faith. Presbyterians baptize adults on their profession of faith as well as the children of church members.
Most Presbyterians are baptized as infants as a sign of God's love and as a recognition of their welcome into our church family. What better way to show God's unconditional love than to baptize a newborn baby? Children will speak for themselves and confirm their baptisms in a confirmation program during their 8th Grade year.
Sunnyside and the Presbyterian Church also practice adult baptism for families who for whatever reason may have chosen not to present their children as infants. Quite frequently when we welcome a new class of members, one or two new members will receive the sacrament as they declare their faith in Christ for the first time.
Baptism signifies the faithfulness of God, the washing away of sin, rebirth, putting on the fresh garment of Christ, being sealed by God's Spirit, adoption into the covenant family of the Church, and resurrection and illumination in Christ.
Important things to know about our Presbyterian tradition:
- Baptism is celebrated in the gathered community of the church in corporate worship.
- Presbyterians do not have private family baptisms.
- All members of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church have the privilege of offering their children for baptism.
- The Session (the board of church elders) approves all baptisms.
If you are not a member but a visitor, and are interested in having your child baptized we invite you to come and worship with us, and consider whether or not Sunnyside might be a home and community for you.
